The rate and the origin of type Ia supernovae in radiogalaxies

چکیده
An analysis of type Ia supernova (SNIa) events in early type galaxies from Evans et al. (1989) database provides strong evidence that the rate of type Ia supernovae (SNe) in radio-loud galaxies is about 6 times higher than the rate measured in radio-quiet galaxies, i.e. SNIarate(radio − loud galaxies) = 0.47 −0.15 h 2 50 SNe per century and per 10 L ⊙ (SNU) as compared to SNIa-rate(radio− quiet galaxies) < ∼ 0.080 h 2 50 SNU. The exact value of the enhancement is still rather uncertain, but is likely to be in the range ∼ 4 − 15. We discuss the possible causes of this result and we conclude that that the enhancement of SNIa explosion rate in radio-loud galaxies has the same common origin as their being strong radio sources, but that there is no causality link between the two phenomena. We argue that repeated episodes of interaction and/or mergers of early type galaxies with dwarf companions are responsible for inducing both strong radio activity in ∼14% of early type galaxies, and the ∼ 1 Gyr old stellar population needed to supply an adequate number SNIa progenitors. Within this scenario we predict that the probability of detecting a core-collapse SN event in radio-loud elliptical galaxies amounts to about 4% of their SNIa events. High Redshift Supernova Rates
We use a sample of 42 supernovae detected with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on-board the Hubble Space Telescope as part of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey to measure the rate of core collapse supernovae to z ∼ 0.7 and type Ia supernovae to z ∼ 1.6. This significantly increases the redshift range where supernova rates have been estimated from observations. The rate of core collaps...
متن کاملLuminosity Functions of Type Ia Supernovae and their Host Galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
The sample of 137 low-redshift type Ia supernovae with 0.05 ≤ z ≤ 0.3 obtained from the SDSS-II Supernova Survey for the southern equatorial stripe of 300 square degrees is used to derive the luminosity functions of type Ia supernovae and of their host galaxies in the gri passbands. We show that the luminosity function of type Ia supernova host galaxies matches well with that of galaxies in the...
متن کاملOn the Origin of the Type Ia Supernova Width-luminosity Relation
Brighter Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) have broader, more slowly declining B-band light curves than dimmer SNe Ia. We study the physical origin of this width-luminosity relation (WLR) using detailed radiative transfer calculations of Chandrasekhar mass SN Ia models. We find that the luminosity dependence of the diffusion time (emphasized in previous studies) is in fact of secondary relevance in u...
متن کاملContributions of GRBs and Cen A-like RadioGalaxies to the Cosmic Gamma-ray Background
The contribution to the cosmic diffuse gamma-ray background (CGB) from Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) is studied in the 40 keV 2 MeV regime. We use High Energy Resolution (HER) data from the Burst And Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) aboard the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO) to generate a GRB template spectrum. Although the GRB contribution to the CGB is generally small, in comparison to the ...
متن کاملOn the Relation Between Peak Luminosity and Parent Population of Type Ia Supernovae: A New Tool for Probing the Ages of Distant Galaxies
We study the properties of Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) as functions of the radial distance from their host galaxy centers. Using a sample of 62 SNe Ia with reliable luminosity, reddening, and decline rate determinations, we find no significant radial gradients of SNe Ia peak absolute magnitudes or decline rates in elliptical+S0 galaxies, suggesting that the diversity of SN properties is not rel...
